Joshua has been accessing resources and programs at the Niagara Children’s Centre for the past seven years. Joshua was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy when he was six years old. We needed help to navigate the challenges of muscular dystrophy and Joshua’s paediatrician referred us to the Centre. The staff we met with provided therapy and services that continue to be essential to Joshua’s quality of life to this day.

From physiotherapy to a creating a daily home stretching routine, from finding the best fitting wheelchair to home visits for occupational therapy, the Centre has supported Joshua every step of the way. The Centre facilitated one-on-one speech to text technology training, found a computer that meets Joshua’s needs and recommended home renovations. There is nowhere else in the region that provides all of these services in one place.

Joshua’s Story

I met with Marla at Niagara Children’s Centre. Am I ever glad I did! This is definitely the place we need to support. I came to learn they have a multitude of resources, programs, for kids in need.

For Josh, The Centre has supported him in many ways, including: physiotherapy, creating a daily home stretching routine, assisting us with finding the best fitting wheelchair and coming to his home for occupational therapy visits. The Centre has supported Joshua every step of the way. The Centre even facilitated one-on-one speech to text technology training and found a computer that meets Joshua’s needs and recommended home renovations. There is nowhere else in the region that provides all of these services in one place.

So on October 1st 2017, starting at midnight, I will be walking 100, 000 steps. That will be approx. 76km, 47 miles.  Our goal is to raise $75,000 for Niagara children’s Centre.  The path will take me from Sherkston Ontario along the Friendship trail to Fort Erie, then along the Niagara River Parkway completing the trek in Niagara On The Lake.

In the words of my late Mother “Every drop counts, said the mosquito as he peed into the lake”.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed people can change the world!

Recommending the boccia program has opened up the world of competitive sport to Joshua and he is thriving. Joshua enjoys weekly practices immensely and frequently practices at home. He has participated in several tournaments and won a gold medal at the Ontario Parasport Winter Games in February 2017. Next year, Joshua hopes to join the Ontario Boccia team and represent Ontario at the Canadian National Boccia Competition in 2018. Joshua is working toward reaching his goal with training from his coaches at Niagara Children’s Centre.

As a family that depends on the support and services provided every day by the Centre, we can assure you that the programs and the work that happens there are essential. All of the resources and programs are essential to Joshua’s well-being.

A while back I had a conference to attend. Just before I left a really neat little guy named Josh gave me his card and asked me if I would sponsor him with Help Kids Shine and his fundraising for Boccia Ball.

Now Josh is one of the coolest kids I know. Joshua was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy when he was six years old.  Even with his situation, he is always a ray of sunshine.  He is also a really good Boccia Ball player and has won many awards.

While at this conference I was blessed to hear a gentleman by the name of Pat Fallon. Now Pat was the guest speaker and shared his story about completing the “Triple Seven” .  The Triple Seven is .. 7 marathons, in 7 days on 7 continents. Pats goal was to raise funds and honor a little boy that had a rare form of brain cancer.  As you can image, I was very moved by this and something started stirring inside.

When I returned home, I had Josh’s card in my pocket and added to my thoughts.
One night while trying to sleep, it came to me…..

“Jim, you need to walk 100,000 steps.”

I shared this idea with my wife and once I received her blessing… It was time to answer the call! The ball started rolling.
